Isolation

Isolation was inspired by emerging African architecture, particularly the schools and community projects designed to create opportunity in developing regions. I wanted to explore how simple structures can bring comfort, identity, and belonging to communities that need them most. Using only a pencil, I focused on form and proportion to express function and purpose rather than ornamentation.

This project has essentially turned out to be a case study in how architecture can simultaneously symbolize and provide shelter. The drawing reflects how meaningful but straightforward design decisions have been made in this building―spaces for natural light and natural learning in shaded areas, and a rhythmic structure churning out a touch of local skill. From this drawing, I realized that architecture can symbolize more than aesthetic value and provide a platform for social renewal.
