Dailies

May 15th, 2008 by Trevor

Hello boys and girls.
This is my direct sunlight update.
This first kiddo, Kevin Kardon, is 13 and has Tourette’s. He speaks to students in his school and in the area about his tics and struggles. He has come a long way, according to his mother. For the most part, he has it under control. And he’s a cool, well adjusted kid. Anyways, I was sent to get a portrait.
The I shot some regional tennis tourney action on Sunday.
Monday the Gov. repealed the off-road diesel tax-which means farmers have cheaper fuel for the time being. This guy, Robert Cheely, said the Gov never should have re-instated the tax to begin with. Ha.

Twilight Criterium

May 1st, 2008 by Trevor

So on Saturday, in between drag races, I was downtown for the Twilight Criterium. Tricia (Check out her recent story. She did a great job…) and I were busting it all night. The crowd were huge. I am soooo glad this wasn’t held a month from now….So they shut down a 1k loop for pro cycling-at night. It’s bad-ass. There is an amateur race, hand cyclers, women’s and then finally a men’s. It’s a day. Anyhow, enough rambling. Here are some pictures:

Hand Cycling winner. These guys were really cool and inspiring. My spleen has nuthin on them.

Zoom Zoom.

This kiddo\'s grandfather is apparently the former ABH sports editor....

these faces are why I don\'t race.

This nearly, really sucked for this guy.

Rebecca Larson, of Athens, Women\'s winner

Drag racing is cool. But you knew that.

April 27th, 2008 by Trevor

Hello all!
I haven’t had such a good, tiring time since one year ago exactly. And I was in Talladega then. The rain is finally falling now, constant but not too hard; I’m going to sleep well.
I want to put the following facts/lessons down: 1. There is a BIG difference between 260 mph and 330 mph. And 260 mph is friggin fast. 2. Drag racing people know there shit. 3. Burnt rubber smells better when it is burnt at 200 mph+ 4. As cool as Top Fuel dragsters and funny cars are, nothing is as cool as a muscle car. Even the track announcer said so.
I was covering the NHRA Southern Nationals this weekend and I have been made a fan in the process. Not only were the NHRA people some of the nicest people I have ever worked with but the camaraderie was infectious. The NHRA photogs were a big help for me. I’ve only ever seen it on TV and they guided me along without being pretentious or annoyed at my dumbass. You think it looks easy, but you go stand 10 feet from those cars when they take off with your mouth and eyes open and try not to flinch. Let me know if that worked as well for you as it did me. I nearly puked the first time those Top Fuel cars went by. It had a shockwave that made me howl like Ric Flair. No Shit. It was sooooo awesome. I can see how people get hooked on this sport. It’s refreshing to feel like a 10 year old and have grown men laugh WITH you and find the same joy in it-even after 37 years. All the NHRA shooters are SoCal based…..maybe they know something I don’t. I’ve always wanted to surf….
Anyhow, these pictures are from today; I was out there Thursday and Friday too. I’d love to post every car! On Saturday we had the Twilight Criterium. Which meant nothing to me until Saturday afternoon…..So I’ll -post about that later. Twilight is a very incredible evening as well. Very much an Athens night. Christina and I had a great conversation at the end of it all and she gets the gold star of the night for coming through with the supplies when we both had a closing shift!
bye for now, trev

I worked on a burn out picture all weekend long and I think this is my favorite.

042708_nhra_tf_02_blog.jpg
Ashley Force beat her Dad John in the funny car finals. It was the first time a woman won a NHRA event. I won’t pretend to know this family, but I can say that you can see very clearly how much fun they have and their love. It was pretty cool to see them at the end of the track after a race that was such a landmark. If Ashley lost John would have won his 1,000th race. I mean come on. You couldn’t write that any more dramatic….

042708_nhra_tf_03_blog.jpg
I met these crazy cool people from Alabama (And though they are from Alabama and today was the Talladega race they were here in Georgia! They don’t like NASCAR.) This is Grace Morrow rolling a tire her husband bought her as a birthday present across pit row. They carted the damn thing around all weekend getting it autographed. (sidenote: you can buy parts from these cars. They re-build the engine after EACH run so the crews are left with a bunch of in tact but less than perfect parts. Tires such as this (17 inches wide and 3 feet tall) sell for $75. They retail from Goodyear at $600) Mr. Morrow also had clutch plates and some brake parts. This was also the Morrow’s anniversary weekend. Racing is such a beautiful sickness.

042708_nhra_tf_04_blog.jpg
Hillary Will’s crew pack’s her car Sunday in the pits.

042708_nhra_tf_05_blog.jpg
There was a rain delay and so I made a rain delay picture.

042708_nhra_tf_06_blog.jpg
I want one. Just one. I promise I won’t drive it hard. Well, not often.

042708_nhra_tf_07_blog.jpg
The time sign; 4.542 is seconds and 323.04 is mph. Quarter. mile. for all you unknowing’s out there.

042708_nhra_tf_08_blog.jpg
I saw one of the NHRA photogs using a light meter. It warmed my heart and made me consider adding one back to the bag.

Fat asses watching JJ

March 25th, 2008 by Trevor

Hello all, I forgot about this picture. It’s my roommate JJ jumping into the Broad river. I took it on a kayaking trip he and some of his friends took me on the first weekend I was in Georgia……After talking to Nathan today about kayaking….well, I can’t wait to go kayaking.
trev

I forgot to write this earlier: I gave blood today for the first time since I had my accident. I used to go as soon as I could again, so that felt good. So that’s my big public calling you out (whomever you are!). You never know when you might need blood yourself….and you’ll get on the bone marrow donation list! and you get cookies! ok. I’m done.

This is not how I wanted to see the Dean Dome for the first time.

March 18th, 2008 by Trevor

Road trip! Joe and I are up in Chapel Hill (it’s weird for me to go NORTH to North Carolina)… Anyways, we came up today to cover the Memorial for Eve Carson, at her school, UNC. Thousands of people attended. It was amazing to hear so many people say so many good things about one person. It’s so sad.
We’re exploring tomorrow to try and bring home a story for the Sunday edition…
here are some pics:
And the Dean Dome? Super cool building…

Teach Raycroft the way…please.

March 10th, 2008 by Trevor

Hello all, it was a nice sunny day today….but I have the power to change all that! Muuhahahhaha. Soccer portrait. She had 6 shutouts last WEEK….too bad she’s not a Leaf….

It was a tough weekend. I was at the funeral of Eve Carson yesterday. The words her father gave to the Rev. to read really moved me. It was a pretty emotional day…..I struggled most of the time with feeling intrusive for being there and honored to be there. I wish none of us were there. I won’t re-post the pictures but here is a link if you’d like to see the gallery that went with the story.

A few pictures for your Saturday night….

March 8th, 2008 by Trevor

Hello all, here is a few from the last little while. Complaint of the day: Whole Wheat buns at the baseball park. As a fan I was talking to asked: What’s next, Soy hot dogs? Seriously. Leave hot dogs alone. They’re perfect as they were.
trev

It was a chilly day today and I went to the outfield with a 400 and 1.4 converter….hence the weird soft/sharp focus haze.
Baseball w/a converter

Alex Fleming. Alex is a very inspired and very recovering addict. We did a story on a back-to-work program that he excelled in.
From a story about something that has already happened…

Andrew Criswell. I feel for this kid. He had a bad home life and took a bomb to school one day, in hopes of getting away. Well, he did….
Sentencing

This is from a story we’re doing on a local Bait shop. Very cool place.

Last weekend this gymnast, Courtney Kupets, was having a bad-ass day (see below of her supermanning on the unneven bars) when she ruptured her achilles tendon. Yikes. That was tough to see.

More gymanstics….they make it look easy. A link to my gallery from this meet:

Basketball is over now. This is my best action picture from the season.

Back to Georgia

February 21st, 2008 by Trevor

Well I’m back in Georgia. I talked to Mom tonight and she was telling me about the snow they were getting; 3 inches and hour-for 36 hours. Dad was driving on 81 and snow was gathering on his hood. For the record, that’s ridiculous. There is nothing remotely romantic (ok, maybe a little) about that much snow. How did people function 150 years ago?

Editing frenzy….

February 12th, 2008 by Trevor

I’ve been editing through the last fews months of my Banner-Herald pictures in the past few days. Sorry Cory, this isn’t going to be a hockey picture….
This picture was cropped square in the paper! Anyways, here is my crop and a little bit better play….depending n how big your monitor is.
are these pictures too big? (is there such a thing?)
